Matariki – Das Neujahrsfest der Maori

„Matariki“ bezeichnet in der Sprache der Ureinwohner Neuseelands, der Maori, das Sternenbild der Plejaden. Beim Aufgang der Plejaden kurz vor Sonnenaufgang im Mai oder Juni feiern die Maori ihrer Zeitrechnung nach das neue Jahr.
Im Museum wird Matariki zu Ehren des Maori-Hauses Rauru begangen.

Um 18 Uhr führt Dr. Jeanette Kokott, Abteilungsleiterin Ozeanien, durch das Haus und erläutert die faszinierenden Schnitzereien. Im Anschluss zeigen wir drei sehr unterschiedliche Kurzfilme aus Neuseeland:

Blood and Bone

Grieving the death of his father, 19-year-old Haami (Michael Koloi) starts hanging around with a local underground boxing promoter. In order to pay off Haami’s drug debt and keep him safe, his uncle Moko (ta moko artist Gordon Toi Hatfield), an ex-street fighter, must make one last sacrifice and step up to fight for his family. Written and directed by Joseph Lee, this gritty short film also features a cameo acting performance by Scotty Morrison, better known as long-time newsreader for Te Karere.

Two Cars, One Night

While waiting for their parents, two boys and a girl meet in the carpark of a rural pub. What at first seems to be a relationship based on rivalry soon develops into a close friendship. We learn that love can be found in the most unlikely of places.
